Iran says:
The president of Iran has said mediation efforts to end the war have begun as the US and Israel continued to carry out air strikes on Tehran.
Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was “committed to lasting peace”, but added that his country would keep defending itself.
In a statement, he said: “Some countries have begun mediation efforts. Let’s be clear: we are committed to lasting peace in the region yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation’s dignity and sovereignty.
“Mediation should address those who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict.”
Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, warned early on Friday that the number of strikes on Iran would increase “dramatically” as Israel and America moved into “the next phase” of their military campaign.
Washington deployed more warplanes to the Gulf after the US was granted permission to use British military bases, with Donald Trump saying: “The big one is coming soon.”
Sir Keir Starmer urged the US president on Thursday to negotiate an endto the war, claiming it was his “strong view” that the two countries needed to “de-escalate” the crisis through talks.
The Trump administration has been ambiguous about how long it has intended to continue the conflict. The US president previously said it would last “four to five weeks” before stating that the US military could fight “forever”.

Russia ‘providing Iran with intel to strike US assets’
Russia is providing Iran with intelligence to attack American forces in the Middle East, US officials have told the Washington Post.
Since the war began nearly one week ago, Russia has given Iran the locations of three US military assets, including warships and aircraft, the officials told the newspaper.
“It does seem like it’s a pretty comprehensive effort,” one official said.
Moscow has condemned the joint US-Israeli operation in Iran as a “deliberate, premeditated and unprovoked act of armed aggression.”

War will ‘bring down economies of the world’, says Qatari minister
The ongoing war in Iran will “bring down the economies of the world” if it continues for several more weeks, Qatar’s energy minister has warned.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Saad al-Kaabi told the Financial Times that GDP growth “around the world will be impacted”.
“Everybody’s energy price is going to go higher. There will be shortages of some products and there will be a chain reaction of factories that cannot supply,” he said in an interview published today.
